Stan and Ollie Statue
A statue of Laurel and Hardy is set to be erected in the Cumbrian town of Ulverston.
Stan Laurel was born in Ulverston in 1890 before moving to the States and a tribute was originally designed and built two years ago, but plans to erect it in the comedian’s home town stalled and the effigy sat in storage.
However, a grant from South Lakeland District Council of £100,000 looks set to restart plans, with the statue hopefully put in place in County Square within 18 months.
The bronze sculpture was created by Graham Ibbeson – who also designed the statue of Eric Morcambe unveiled in Morcambe back in 1999 – and it captures the double act leaning against a lamppost with a small dog.
It will be positioned in front of the towns Coronation Hall theatre where the pair made a public appearance in 1947.
