Shindiggerous Six

Iain Lee Forget Danny Baker, there’s another minor celebrity taking over the podcast town! Well if he has any material left…

Iain Lee started his Shindiggery podcast as a bit of fun, and it continues as such, but only if he can continue to knock them out… He has made it to number 6 (iTunes link), and it’s still a good quality show (and we say that irrespective of the fact that he namechecks the website).

There are some reports that the recording starts with a disturbing whispering voice pleading to escape, this reviewer must have missed it, but it sounds more like a prank by certain of Lee’s fans.

“Varinder thinks about Pete Doherty” is one of the highlights of this particular podcast, as the creature known to Iain’s LBC listeners as Varinder tells us what enters his head when asked about the drug-addict singer. In other hands this could be used as a indictment of the country’s schooling standards, but on shindiggery it is just plain funny.

Many of the LBC listeners would have heard that the candy-floss-haired US Radio DJ Howard Stern took an interest in Iain Lee recently as one of Stern’s fans called to shout “Ba-ba-boo-ee” down a phoneline to Iain – a custom started and encouraged by the American. After this recording is played back Stern displays the world awareness of, well, an American, by stating that all radio in the UK is state-controlled. Of course Stern takes the freedom in his country to swear as punctuation – remember this, and Shindiggery in generally, isn’t necessarily for young kids.

The old flipping between channels gag is used later, to produce some fairly base humour – this is not an original, and not an amazing version, but it can catch you unawares at times.

The occasional “Website of the Week” is as informative as it is succint – you really gotta go visit this one, in fact regularly go to all websites Iain mentions….

The show proper ends with another of Iain’s prank calls. This is one to Mike Mendoza, a radio DJ who apparently used to be on LBC, and Iain’s call shows up that either Mendoza was asleep during the call, or he just doesn’t care.

After the much-loved signature tune comes a classic song murdered by Varinder. Murdered by throttling, cut to pieces, then placed into numerous casserole dishes and left out in the sun for too long. A nice ender…

Laughriot met up with Iain recently to ask him questions and get him to answer – find out what happened tomorrow as we publish part one of the interview.
