No more Red Dwarf?

It’s no secret that A Red Dwarf movie has been in pre-production for quite some time now. In fact the news has had upwards of six years to travel; yet nothing much has been heard of the project since 2003 leaving most fans to pin their hopes on a ninth series.
Unfortunately Doug Naylor disappointed many at a recent Red Dwarf convention when he revealed that, “some time ago, BBC2 decided not to take up their option for a potential Series IX, instead they said they were keen to pursue other projects.”
He then went on to say “They also told us that they weren’t interested in buying the TV rights for the Red Dwarf film, despite liking the script, as they weren’t convinced the film would be a success.”
Is a show that stands at number 18 in the list of the BBC’s 100 Best British Sitcoms really going to be left on a cliff hanger? Let’s hope not.
