The Life and Times of Vivienne Vyle review

Vivienne VyleMy first thoughts of the new Jennifer Saunders sitcom was that this is just a more subtle take on AbFab. Of course it’s leaning more towards being a Comedy/Drama but so are most sitcoms nowadays.

Saunders plays a vain chat show host with little subtlety when it comes to dealing with the upset and distraught (not too dissimilar to Jeremy Kyle come to think of it). I must say episode one didn’t leave me with much; I felt I still didn’t quite know what it was all about. With this in mind I decided to watch episode two before judging.

It raised the odd titter but I really had to look for reasons to laugh. Not Jennifer Saunders at her best I’m afraid. I’ll probably still watch episode three out of curiosity but It’ll have to be something rather spectacular to keep me ‘til episode four.

It’s a well known fact that sitcoms often take time to become truly funny for example The Brittas Empire which didn’t really become funny until the last episode of it’s first series. But I digress, The problem isn’t only that it’s not funny but that the characters are either so horrible you don’t care to see what becomes of them or so inadequate that it’s hard to imagine any kind of revolt.
