‘Bags & Biscuits’ DVD Review

Norman Lovett - wide viewNorman Lovett walks on stage and decides to get the Red Dwarf bit out of the way. Possibly not his choice as there seems to be someone in the front row screaming “HOLLY!!”.

Lovett then opens the show at his own medium, sometimes disconcerting pace. He brings plenty of plastic bags with him (and seems disturbingly mesmerized by the way they float) but apologizes for having eaten all the biscuits. Ten minutes in and it becomes apparent that he’s not only going to be playing with random knick-knacks pretty much throughout but is also ad-libbing quite heavily.

For the most part this is very funny. A lot of which is down to disbelief that a show has been booked, tickets have been sold and people have turned up to watch a man potter about the stage saying, “Look at this. Good isn‘t it!”. It’s a strange nervous kind of laughter you usually only get from talking to strangers who ask if they can be your friend.

Occasionally he does leave you screaming “get on with it you b*stard!” But for the most part this is an original and ludicrously funny show from a man who learnt the tricks of his trade from the ‘Alternative Comedy’ scene of the 80’s and early 90’s.
