Stephen Grant, Theatre Royal, 11th November 2007

Tonight’s performance at the Theatre Royal in Brighton was being filmed for Stephen’s forthcoming DVD, so it was a full house of excited and expectant comedy fans populating the stunning venue and right from the start, Grant did not disappoint.
Opening the show, the lights went down and a black screen lit up at the back of the stage with some text appearing to say “hello” to us. “I’m the warm up computer”, it said (obviously being Grant hidden away typing at full pelt). The ‘warm up computer’ went on to ask the crowd questions and pick on a few unsuspecting members of the audience, with row 4 getting a particular battering. It’s one of those things that you have to see, but it really was hilarious.
Once the intro was over, Grant went on to question the logic behind pretty much everything. “Why snowboard rather than ski?”, he asked. “I’d rather be looking FORWARDS if I’m going to go down a hill at 70mph”.
The tabloids got a pasting too, with Grant opting to pick on The Express, The Mail and The Guardian rather than the real bottom-feeders, and then it was Apple’s turn to get a mouthfull. “I have an mp3 player, not an Ipod” he exclaimed. “I’m not one of these people that buys into this Apple bullshit. Oh my God, have you seen the new Ipod, and the Imac is amazing – you just take it out of the box, plug in and it’s ready to go. You learn NOTHING!” Very good point Mr Grant, but we love Apple stuff at Laughriot, so knock it off!
Anyway, Grant was in fine form tonight and i can only imagine that the DVD is going to be excellent. And if you don’t fancy the idea of watching stand up on DVD, then fine, but make sure you see him live instead, because in a comedy world full of pointless swearing and unnecessarily controversial jokes, Grant is a refreshing, self-confessed ‘nice guy’.
Here is a clip of Stephen live at the same venue back in 2006:
