Bill Bailey’s ‘Tinselworm’ – Cardiff CIA, 21st Nov ’07
After the huge success of ‘Part Troll’ it’s good to see Bill back again. Though entering stage looking like a Vegas pimp and mumbling his way through one of his signature slow starts it’s still easy to see why he’s so popular.
The show is entitled ‘Tinselworm’ and comes with some very funny animations involving amoeba and Kraftwerk (again); also some new instruments including an enormous horn and old favourites such as the Theremin – that stick that makes noises.
It’s hard to say much about the show without spoiling it for people who are yet to see it so I’ll try to stick to specifics of the Cardiff gig. There must have been something in the air that night as heckles flew towards him in the form of “Eat it”, “Smoke it”, “Blow it up” and “Shag it”. Bill remarked how this is one of the most destructive audiences he’s had. Though somebody was nice enough to give him three warm Polos.
Sadly this time around Bill didn’t offer many new songs, though there were a lot of jokes involving musical instruments he seemed to fall short on actual songs. Still all round an excellent show, he just seemed closer to ‘stand-up comedian’ than ‘stand-up-musical-comedian’ than usual. It was great to hear classics “Das Hokey Kokey” and the “Love Song” in the encore and bloody hilarious to watch Bill ride around the audience on a scooter chasing a Mexican wave.
I’ll definitely be buying the DVD… assuming there’ll be one.
