Simon Munnery – Hello DVD review

“Good evening” says Munnery. Then spends the next few minutes discussing what such a statement might mean.
He’s a comedian who often refuses to take the obvious path of the comedian and actually telling constructed jokes. Instead he tends to go in to fine detail and deconstruct the mundane such as hats, Venn Diagrams and Sainsbury’s.
He manages to keep the audience entertained while reading from a joke book, over a drum beat. Now surely that can’t be allowed?! But then again He’s not really following the rules. ‘Hello’ is less like a stand-up comedy show and more like a one man variety performance. That’s not to say it’s not funny though. On the contrary, Simon displays a unique brand of delivery and often makes even the most awful joke funny.
You can expect character comedy, songs, beat poetry and an audience singing a song that’s been knitted in to an enormously long scarf and then passed through the rows. I’m telling you about the scarf now so you can decide on a reaction for when you do see it. I didn’t quite know how to feel. The scene selection says it all. The first section being labelled “stand-up” and then various characters including ‘Alan Parker – Urban Warrior’ and the aptly named ‘Security Guard’. I’ll leave you with a quote.
“All roads link up. Topologically there’s only one road. If you can imagine a road that isn’t linked to any other road it’s not a road is it? It’s a runway.”
