Knock2Bag, 18th June 2008

It’s a hard task putting together a completely brilliant line-up – but Knock2Bag came as near as possible this past Wednesday.
This intimate venue in a downstairs bar a minute from Shepherds Bush Hammersmith & City line station was packed, in anticipation of some highly rated acts – and one late announced special guest.
Richard Sandling was the extremely genial, friendly MC who kept the energy up through what turned out to be quite a long evening – partly helped by creating a new catchphrase for himself of “AWESOME”!
Kicking off the evening was Spencer Brown who provided a very assured performance, interacting with some of the “weirder” audience members. Knock2Bag’s resident comedian Brian Gittins was away this week so taking his place as Angelos – not the sort of act that really works for me.
Robert White is a hyperactive ball of zany, camp energy – with a keyboard! A brilliant set from Robert led on to the special guest Stephen Merchant. The lanky Extras star demonstrated why there was so much fuss about him returning to stand-up. A pitch-perfect set, with hints of the humour that has given him and Gervais so much success in the writing of The Office and Extras. Quite a treat.
And there were still two acts to come! Stephen Carlin is a calm, assured stand-up, rightly chosen in Stewart Lee’s “Top Ten Stand-Ups in the World Ever…” show recently. Robin Ince rounded off the evening with an excellent performance, pontificating hilariously about everything from Fox News to how whether The Guardian or The Independent had the best supplements!
A superb line-up, good venue, and all for a very reasonable price. Well done Knock2Bag!
