Matt Lucas and David Walliams’ fabulous creation of ‘Little Britain’ was last seen as part of Comic Relief last year. During the short specials they worked alongside numerous celebrities including Dawn French, Jonathan Ross and Peter Kay. Some people presumed that this was the final outing for the show that had been an unexpected hit back in 2003.
This week, many of the most popular characters from the show return in less familiar settings. In a similar style to ‘Little Britain Abroad’ (2006) where numerous characters went on holiday to different countries, ‘Little Britain USA’ sees the characters move over to America. There are a number of familiar faces including, Lou and Andy, Bubbles DeVere, Marjorie Dawes and Carol ‘Computer Says No!’ Beer.
In addition to these characters they are now joined by typical little American girl Ellie Grace consistently throwing in sexual references, Phyllis and her dog who she believes is telling her to do stupid things and Bing Gordon, the eighth man on the moon.
Some of the sketches work better than others- it is certainly comical to see Marjorie Dawes holding her first ‘Weight Watchers’ meeting in the States. Later in the series Sebastian (who due to recent politics has now become Prime Minister) is due to meet with the President and Dafydd is even set to make appearances.
It does appear that some of Little Britain’s magic is beginning to spread a little thinly due to having to relocate the characters in order to keep the sketches ‘alive’. Tom Barker’s narrative continues to lead the view tantalisingly throw the show.
