Rhod Gilbert announces 2009 national tour, culminating at the Wales Millennium Centre

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

The multi award-winning Welsh Misery is back for a further national tour with his if.comedy nominated show.  Following a sell-out hit run at the Edinburgh Festival with extra dates added due to overwhelming public demand, Rhod brings his critically acclaimed show around the UK culminating with a final gig at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.

‘Rhod Gilbert & The Award-Winning Mince Pie’ begins in a service station, at about 2.40am.  Armed with a travel pillow, a flask and a very powerful torch, Rhod aggressively demands to know more about the ‘Award-Winning Mince Pie’ on display on the counter.  Suddenly aware of what he is doing, he is forced to acknowledge that he may be having a very mild nervous breakdown.  How did it come to this?  He doesn’t even like Mince Pies.  The pressures of living in a tedious, pointless and absurd world surrounded by idiots have finally taken their toll.  Perhaps he should never have left his fantasy world of Llanbobl in the first place.  This is the slightly ridiculous story of how one Mince Pie broke the camel’s back.

The 2009 tour starts in Doncaster, Darlington and Salford in mid January, and ends on 29th March at Cardiff’s Millennium Centre.

Elizabeth & Raleigh – Late But Live

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

It’s a very impressive line-up of comedians involved in this production.  From Stewart Lee (“Jerry Springer the Opera”, “Lee and Herring”) as writer, Miles Jupp () as potato-fiend Sir Walter Raleigh, and the legend that is Simon Munnery as a disturbing and hilarious Queen Elizabeth.  Fun and laughs are near guaranteed.

This is the second time this trio have attempted this type of historical comedy show, last year they tackled Johnson & Boswell to great success during the Edinburgh festival and subsequent tour.

They’ve repeated the winning formula this year but have shifted their focus to the relationship between Raleigh and his Queen.

Both strong performers perform and sell the gags with perfect timing and go along with the weirder elements of Lee’s script – where else can you see a bouncing Queen?  They are joined by Jane Watkins who adds the musical elements to the show.

All in all a great night out, barely classifiable, very funny, slightly rude and just a tad historical!
